On the subject of sheds and shacks again, I enjoyed this article on a couple who built a 12 x 12 ft cabin up in Canada for their family with two kids and a dog. They doubled their living space by adding an equal sized deck and they used lots of recycled elements and materials throughout. I thought their use of Rebar in the deck railing was smart, thrifty and good looking.

Lucky enough to have land with a little shed or old garage on it? Our region has so many great resources for purchasing, swapping and snagging old building materials-- you can take any sad shed and make it into a retreat or office with a little creative recycling.

In addition to roadside finds, flea markets and garage sales, UW Surplus, Second Use and Seattle Building Salvage are a few good spots to tour frequently. Let me know if you need directions to them-- I've found some nice materials and elements over the years.
